Operating moveable bridges
You will find a range of bridges on the canals. Many are narrow and low. Most you’ll just cruise under but some need to be moved out of the way to let your boat pass.
To operate a moveable bridge you need to land a member of your crew well before you reach the bridge. They can go ahead and open the bridge.
- Mechanised road bridges – first check the road is clear and close the warning barriers if there are any. Open the bridge using the windlass or a navigation authority key. Make sure you open them again once the bridge is back in place.
- Manual swing bridges – unlock the retaining chain and push the bridge to its buffer stop. Once your boat is through, push the bridge back into place and put the chain or lock back on.
- Manual lift bridges – pull the chain hanging from the balance arm and make sure it stays up until your boat is clear of the bridge. Then gently lower the bridge using the chain and take care not to let it drop.
